Inter-Mission Industrial Development Association.
It all began in the residence of Dr. Paul Gupta, within the Hindustan Bible Institute, when a group of men all burning with the same vision met together on 17.3.1974. Christians in the west became more aware of the deplorable situation of countless children in India without parents or without homes. As a result, over the preceding years, many orphanages had been established all over India. As more people generously sponsored orphanages, it was soon realized that after growing out of these orphanages, the young adults needed to be cared for as well.
A society had to be formed to take care of this important aspect of orphanage work. Jochen Tewes who had come to India in 1973 with this burden in his heart, found some like-minded Indian brothers who would help carry out his vision for the economically under-privileged in India. On 17th of March 1974 they founded the “Inter-Mission Industrial Development Association” or more simply known as “IID”.
With great dedication, a small beginning was made in July 1974. Jochen Tewes, a mechanical engineer from Germany, and D.J. Alexander, a retired technician from the Indian Army were the first to work full-time on this project. A thatched-roof shed was made for Rs.2000, to teach seven young boys the metalworker trade called “fitter”. With a few tools and a lot of prayer, this vocational training school started at the MPA mission compound in Pallavaram, a suburb of Chennai.
This start gave rise to an unexpected development. Young women and men left their orphanages and more training centers were developed to teach them different trades and vocations so that they could have a chance to become self-supportive once they left IID. Several training centers, orphanages, day care centers, farms, community colleges, money-lending schemes and other rehabilitation centers were added and enlarged during the years of the existence of IID. We hope that you will enjoy reading about the different centers, and the way in which lives have been changed due to these training centers. More details
